33% single mother households in
Massachusetts live in poverty

Meet Michelle, a Women`s Money Matters graduate and founder of @soulfire.mvmt, a dance and mindfulness fitness business she built from the ground up as a single mom.
Michelle had been running her business for years – she had the skills, the clients, and five new contracts ready to go, the only thing standing in her way was reliable transportation.
That barrier is now gone. Thanks to our partnership with @secondchancecars_ and @metrocu, Michelle now has the wheels to keep growing what she`s built, for herself, and for her daughters.
In her own words: "This is bigger than just a car. This is community work."
Congratulations, Michelle. We are so proud of you. 🎉🔑

Congratulations to the newest graduates of our Financial Futures program!
ㅤ
This cohort was open to all in the Greater Lowell community and graciously hosted at Lowell Housing Authority. Thank you, LHA, for offering your space for eight weeks so this incredible group of women could build financial skills, set goals, and show up for each other session after session.
ㅤ
“When I reflect on this program, I think about all the great connections I made. Through these very connections, we discovered that financial stress is one that most face and more common than I, and the others, thought it was. Going through this program taught me new strategies and changed my perspective on financial debts. I used to think of debts as a ball and chain. After having these deep conversations and learning new spending and saving strategies, I was able to overcome most of my debt and feel more confident in my financial future.” - Jessica, Financial Futures Graduate.
ㅤ
To every woman in this cohort: you did the work. We`re so proud of you.

This Mother`s Day, we`re thinking about two mothers who built something remarkable, without a roadmap, without a program, and without a community telling them it was possible.
ㅤ
Jeanne Liriano immigrated from the Dominican Republic, opened multiple businesses, and raised her children largely on her own. She educated herself through books and audiobooks, talked openly with her kids about money, and figured it out through sheer will.
ㅤ
Imran Malek`s mother arrived from India as a single mother in New Hampshire, built a motel business, and became the financial resource her family turned to.
ㅤ
Neither had coaches. Neither had formal cohorts of women cheering them on. Neither had Women`s Money Matters.
ㅤ
Their children — Christina Alfaro, WMM`s Program and Tech Lead and Volunteer Coach, and Imran Malek, WMM Board Member — both joined this organization because they were inspired by what they watched their mothers do alone.
ㅤ
"My mom figured it out on her own, at a time and in a field that wasn`t exactly welcoming to women, and without the kind of structured support that makes that journey easier," Christina says. "She never had the chance to not do it alone.”
ㅤ
"What my mother had was access to a network that most people don`t have the good fortune of finding on their own,” says Imran. “Women`s Money Matters is, in many ways, the formalization of that. It takes something that happened organically in our community and makes it accessible to anyone, regardless of who they know or where they come from.”
ㅤ
That is what we are building. A place where no woman has to figure it out alone.
ㅤ
Happy Mother`s Day to every mother doing the work, and to everyone who shows up to make sure the next generation has more support than the last. 💚
